Kent Night Cup: 3

Local level event

Explanation of event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Map / Terrain

This is our first visit to our newly mapped area of Singleton. The 1: 10 000 scale waterproof map is based on Open Street Map with a number of improvements (yes, I've been around and checked for locked gates, missing paths etc. etc. so it should be good to go). The more adventurous of you may also visit Stanhope and other parts of South Ashford. The terrain is typical urban residential with intricate paths and roads, so plenty of route choice and decision points to keep you thinking. There is a small area of wild/natural parkland that may be visited, the paths of which were relatively dry when checked in mid October. A road shoe with a bit of grip should suffice unless its rained hard recently. Shorts are also okay, but you may need to watch out for the odd nettle on some of the smaller footpaths.

Apres O will be at The County Hotel on the High Street in Ashford. Parking is available behind the pub (13 Park Street, TN24 8LH. W3W: space.wicked.chemistry) Charges may apply. Alternatively, park at the Vicarage Lane Parking (TN23 1QD) which is free after 18:00.

To get a sense of numbers coming, please tick the Apres O box in racesignup.

Yes, there will be prizes!

Course Information

The course is a 60 minute score. 25 controls that can be taken in any order. No funny business. 10 points per control, 10 points penalty per minute/part minute beyond 60 minutes.

Please note: We will be using MapRun for control validation at this event. You will need to have downloaded MapRun to your phone or gps watch prior to the event. Full details on how to do this can be found on the Saxons Website. If you have not used MapRun before I recommend taking a moment to familiarise yourself beforehand.

You will also need to bring your dibber. There will be a mass start, but you are also required to complete an SI punch at the Finish. This is to avoid any issues with MapRun not registering your finish correctly, and act as a safety check.

Regular KNCers will have been aware of a survey made at the end of last season. An outcome was to use MapRun for our Urban KNCs in the 2023/4 season. Please read the document. If you are still unclear on these requirements please contact the organiser.

Juniors (age 15 or younger) are welcome to take part but must be accompanied by an adult (condition of British Orienteering insurance for Street events)
Bright headtorches used by competitors should not be shone in to households potentially upsetting the young or elderly occupants. Move promptly away from the control after visiting. Please be courteous to the public

Separate/loose control descriptions will not be provided.
