Explanation of event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Report

The drizzle held off and we had perfect English summer weather for Orienteering – dry and not too warm. Competitors enjoyed visiting all corners of Dunorlan Park, circumnavigating the lake multiple times on a not too strenuous Short and Long Score followed by lovely home-made cake for the early finishers.

The park was a good intro to Orienteering and we welcomed a few newcomers who all seemed to enjoy themselves.

Thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help at the start and download and to our trusty band of control collectors who leapt into action after the last finisher, so we packed up and went home in record time.

Thanks also to Simon Blanchflower for the map updates and Mark Glaisher & Alison Howe for advice on the courses.

Map / Terrain

Dunorlan is a special place where everyone can enjoy a richly varied Victorian garden, meadows and wildlife, as well as the amenities of a modern park. Dunorlan Park is spacious and elegant with wild grassy slopes and magnificent views across the lake to the Weald.

Dunorlan was once the private grounds of a large and very grand mansion built by the Yorkshire-born millionaire, Henry Reed, who made his fortune in Tasmania.

The garden was laid out in the 1850s and 1860s by the renowned Victorian gardener, Robert Marnock. The mansion no longer exists, but the garden is one of the best preserved examples of Marnock’s work.

In 2003/4 the park underwent a major restoration costing £2.8 million, following a Heritage Lottery Fund award of £2.1 million.
