Local level event

Explanation of event levels

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Report

Effervescent Saxons Team Captain Brendon Howe took time out from planning our assault on the Compass Sport Trophy for the following weekend, to set a very enjoyable course on the slightly flatter parts of Ightham. A couple of locals stopped to politely enquiry why a herd of enthusiasts were charging round the woods on a dark evening. They wished us well, and drove away with a smile on their faces. And we got on with our fun return to Night Orienteering.

Nobody quite smashed the course - with the "Double Dog Bone Bonus" proving a challenge that some took up, and some didnt. Chris Hooker was the only one to visit all the controls in the correct order (but no bonuses), and bettering a couple of speedy bonus hunters, but he was pipped at the post by SO clubmate Neil Crickmore. First Lady this week was Julie Collins.

One or two folk bemoaned their lack of prep with their own headtorches, but made the best of it. We had a decent turnout of the usual suspects, plus newcomer Rob who gave a good account of himself. Then half of us traipsed off to the Chequers pub in nearby Heaverham, where we were very well looked after. Mark Collins scooped the best prize of an Orange Cauliflower!

Next week, KNC 2 is at Horley (near Gatwick Airport) for a MapRun Street-O organised by Southdowns Orienteers, Those of you who remember this area from last time we visited, will be pleased to know the footpaths have now been thoroughly mapped.

Directions / Parking

Parking is somewhat constrained. Please use one of the following:

The Event Centre, Start and Finish are on Fullers Hill @ ///prices.flap.rust. Please do not try to park on Fullers Hill as there is not enough room for cars to pass.

For those parking on Saxbys, please consider leaving your side lights on, particularly if you're at the Northern part. Do leave a gap every few cars to allow Southbound cars to pull in if any Northbound cars are present (unlikely).

Please see a schematic of the parking opportunities here: Ightham parking plan KNC 2024

Public Transport Options

Trains to Sevenoaks or Borough Green. A lift would be required from either station; please contact the organiser if you need assistance finding one.

Map / Terrain

For those who are familiar with Ightham, we are using the Western section of the map. The northern part of the map is peppered with small contour features, pits and gullies, whereas the South is more open.

The race area is bisected by the A25 as well as some other small roads. Please exercise caution when crossing all roads, particularly the A25. There is pavement on the N side, and a verge on the S side so there is no need to burst onto the carriageway. The road is straight so it should be easy to see the vehicles (and for them to see you), however, please do take your time, and cross safely.

Controls are on a mixture of features, some simple to find, others more challenging. You will need your compass skills, with the emphasis on good navigation, rather than just running fast.

Course Information

The course is a 90s and 100s format with two dog bones. One hour score.

The course will cross the A25. As a result, it is not suitable for unaccompanied juniors. For juniors particularly keen to take part, please get in touch; I may be possible to create a 'Just for Fun' course that stays North of the A25.
