Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Report

We hope you enjoyed this KNC round in a remapped area. It was very exciting for most of us to explore a new area at night. Well done to the many members of the Stour Striders Running Club who took part.

With thanks to: Brian Henry for Mapping & Organising; Forestry England for allowing use of the area; Brendon, Alison, Nick, Mark F and a few others for control collecting; and The Timber Batts @ The Compasses for allowing us to use the pub as our base.

************ NEWS ALERT ******** KNC 21 on 13th March will now be an Urban event in Tenterden. Thanks to Karen Ransley for offering to organise this at short notice.

Overview

Eggringe Wood is a charming mix of woodlands and grassy downs, featuring many long rides and complex earthwork elements from the past. The area has not been used for over 30 years and has just been remapped with all the remarkable ground features accurately placed in the open woods. The challenge lies in route choice on the rides, orienting through the runnable woods, and accurately navigating the feature-rich landscape.

Map / Terrain

The map is a full-colour orienteering map at a 1:10000 scale with 5m contours. Most of the wooded area is flat, with steeper downland and wooded valleys towards the race area's edges. The wood is actively managed, with recently felled blocks, dense coppices, and fir trees among many lovely open ancient woodlands. There are numerous broad and long runnable rides throughout the area.

The complex earth features of banks, pits, and depressions have been simplified for map clarity. Careful reading of the control descriptions will aid route choice and navigating through the features when necessary. Some pits are deep and steep-sided and should be approached with caution. Control points will be thoughtfully placed for both safety and to assist with the point of attack close to the feature.

A minor country lane runs through the area. There will be no manned or advised crossing points, so caution must be taken when crossing it.

Course Information

This is a 60-minute score course suitable for all abilities, with 20 controls 90 to 109 (plus 2 optional dumbells). Visit as many controls as you can. Each control is worth 10 points.

There are also two 20 point bonuses, for completing each of the 2 Dumbells (90/91 and 100/101).

10-point penalty per minute or part-minute beyond 60 minutes.

Thus, the maximum score is 240 points.

The course closes at 8.45pm.

Juniors (age 15 or younger) are welcome to participate but must be accompanied by an adult, as required by British Orienteering insurance for street events. The woods are isolated and cover a large area surrounded by farmlands. Please bring bright head torches, a spare torch, a whistle, and a phone for emergencies (note: mobile coverage is patchy in the area). Separate or loose control descriptions will not be provided.

The controls points will be SIAC enabled and a Si Dibber is required for event (available for hire). After your run, please download as usual in the pub car park. Total time printouts will be provided and formal results will be available on the website the following day.
