Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Map / Terrain

New map (2024) 1:7,500 with 5m contours printed on waterproof paper.

Dering Wood extends across almost 126 hectares (310 acres) of ancient, semi-natural woodland. The area is almost flat with a good path network (muddy in places after rain). It is criss-crossed by numerous ditches, some wet but most dry. Although some areas have dense brambles these can be avoided and the controls will mainly be found in open runnable woodland.

Main landforms are ditches, earth walls and some ponds. Most ditches are mapped with the brown or blue dotted line symbol (small erosion gully or narrow marsh) although one larger one is mapped as a gully (solid brown line). Most obvious ditches are mapped (deeper than approx 0.3m), see image, but there are also the remains of numerous older shallow ditches largely lost in the leaf litter which are not mapped. Where ditches and earthwalls coincide the more obvious has been mapped.

Benches are mapped as “O” and wigwam hides as “X” (also in control descriptions).

Course Information

You may find controls in any order (10 points each) but if you visit pairs with the same last digit consecutively you score 10 bonus points. e.g. 96 followed by 106 or 107 followed by 97. Pairs are joined on the map with a line. Max points 300 (20x10 for controls and potentially 10x10 pairs bonus points).

Late return after 60 mins is penalised 10 points per min (or part min).

You must carry a torch/headtorch with battery for >1hour plus a back-up light and a whistle.
