Kent Night Cup
Training level event
Explanation of event levels
Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.
Terrain type: Urban & Woodland
Overview
This is a taster event for the Kent Night Cup Series.
It is primarily aimed for orienteers who have not done (much) night orienteering before.
Coaching will be available throughout the event, if required. The emphasis is on learning about Night Orienteering and/or how to do a Score Course more efficiently.
Orienteers can, if they choose, be paired up with an experienced Night Orienteer, to collaborate on route choice etc, and be accompanied round the course to learn a few tips and tricks from our 'Night Hawks'.
We will bring along a selection of members' headtorches, which you will be welcome to sample during the evening, so don't worry if you do not have your own (yet).
Regular Night Orienteers are welcome to take part too, as a training activity to test out their headtorches or just to practice your skills etc - check the section on Controls.

Course Information
Two separate courses, to be done in turn.
1) 10 virtual MapRun controls on streets and footpaths in Vigo Village to be done in approximately 20 minutes (although no real restriction). Start outside Village Hall. Finish outside The Village Pub. Controls numbered 1 through to 10 - all on road/path junctions. Visit controls in any sequence. Optimal distance is approximately 3k if visiting all controls.
2) 10 SIAC Flagged controls in upper part of Trosley Country Park – none down the slope/hill! To be done in approximately 40 minutes for this part (although no real restriction). Start/Finish just inside the woods. Controls numbered 91,92,93,94,95,101,102,103,104,111 - mostly on 'off-path' features. Visit controls in any sequence. Straight-line distance is approximately 3k if visiting all controls. However, to create a greater challenge for yourself if you want to, then perhaps visit the 90s, then 111, then the 100s.
Please note: We will be using MapRun for control validation for the first part of this event. You will need to have downloaded MapRun to your phone or GPS watch prior to the event. Full details on how to do this can be found in Procedure for Saxons Map Run based KNC events v2, although there will be time on the evening to talk you through this process, if you need help.
You will also need to bring your dibber, for the second part of the event.
Juniors (age 15 or younger) are welcome to take part but must be accompanied by an adult (condition of British Orienteering insurance for Street events).
Bright headtorches used by competitors should not be shone in to households potentially upsetting the young or elderly occupants. Move promptly away from the control after punching. Please be courteous to the public.
Separate/loose control descriptions will not be provided.

Entry Details
Pre-entry only via https://racesignup.co.uk/
Each Individual (member/non-member): £2
Basic non-SIAC dibber (electronic timing device) available for hire free of charge.
Registration and Start times
Registration: Pre-entry only via www.racesignup.co.uk by midnight Wed 9 October (day before event). However, due to the size of the indoor meeting point, there will be a limit on numbers. So, if you are keen to come, please don't leave it to the last minute to try to book on racesignup!
To get the most out of the evening, we recommend that you agree to be paired up with a more (or less) experienced night orienteer (as appropriate). We will try to do the pairings/groups based on gender and running speed. However, if you don't wish to be paired up, that's ok too. You will have plenty of opportunity to chat to the club coaches and other orienteers throughout the evening.
No Registration on the night. Pre-entry via racesignup is essential, and will require details for safety purposes.
Assembly will be in the Restaurant Room at The Villager pub in Vigo Village, from 6:30pm, aiming for a prompt start at 6:45pm.
We will aim to finish by about 9:15pm, after a short de-briefing session back in the Restaurant Room at the pub.
Facilities
There are no public toilets, but you will be able to use the toilets at The Villager pub. There are no separate changing facilities.
Food and drink will be available in The Villager pub, if you require it, immediately after you have completed the courses (at around 8:30pm). Food needs to be pre-ordered via your racesignup entry form by 3pm on Sunday 6th October. This is to guarantee your choice of food, and to make things easier for the chef.
You will then need to pay for your own food choice, on arrival at the pub, and the food will be ready for you at the end of your trot around the woods.
Menu will be attached here.... (prior to entries opening in racesignup)
