Event Report

We hope you enjoyed your run at Perry Wood - what a lovely evening for a run/walk/jog around the woods.

Generally maprun didn't ping for one or two controls per competitor, so here are the final adjusted results, and including those who didn't use the MapRun app.

Pre Event Info

Saxons welcome you to a summer evening orienteering event in Perry Wood, between Faversham and Ashford. Perry Wood is a beautiful woodland managed by Swale council. There are fine views to the south across the North Downs, and lots of interesting features for orienteering. Some areas are runnable even in high summer, but this is summer so there will be bracken and brambles. The course will be planned to avoid too much hacking through tough stuff and many controls will be on or near the good path network if you want to avoid undergrowth.

We are offering a 60 minute score course suitable for both beginners and experienced orienteers. We will be using the latest smartphone app, MapRun, to record your visit to the control sites. The app also records your times and plots your route on it's map.

If you don't have a smartphone, or if the app doesn't work, you can still do the event. Controls are marked with flags and just let the organiser know how many you visited at the end.

Registration & Start Times

Start

Start between 7.05pm and 7.15pm, start when you're ready keeping at least a few seconds apart. If you're a bit late you can start up to 7.30.

After your run / Apres - O

After your run please don't forget to let the organiser know you have finished and let him know how many controls visited for results. For those that want some relaxing post event refreshments, chat about routes etc, there will be a post event gathering at The White Lion in Selling, about 1 mile from the car park. There is a large beer garden if the weather is nice, and lots of indoor seating. If you wish to order food, please sign up to the form before your run to give the pub a chance to cook your dinner. The event organiser will display a menu near the start. See https://www.whitelionselling.co.uk/ if you can't wait!

Course Information

There is one course, a score course. Find as many of the 20 controls as possible (in any order) in one hour. Each control is worth 10 points. No penalties for being late, but please be back as soon as possible after 60 minutes so we can pack up and get to the pub for food.

Experienced orienteers who are fast runners will find these 20 controls in under 60 minutes, so to add an extra challenge there will be 3 extra points available for 'dumbells' if you go between controls 5 and 15, 9 and 19, or 1 and 11.

As an experiment, we will be using your mobile phone to record that you have been to the control using 'MapRun'. Before the event please download the MapRun6 app from the apple or google app store depending on your phone. You'll need to take your phone with you in a bum bag or small rucksac, unless you have a GPS watch. If you don't have a smartphone then you can complete the course without the phone.

Controls will be marked with control flags (no punching - the MapRun app does that). At the finish please tell the organiser how many controls you have visited. MapRun will record your split times and GPS track to see in detail how you did.

If you don't have a smartphone, or if it doesn't work for some reason, simply visit the controls, and let the organiser know how many you visited at the end.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GETTING YOUR PHONE READY FOR THE EVENT

There is a little bit of setting up to do before the event to get this to work. The mobile phone reception at Perry Wood is a bit hit and miss, so this is best done at home.

If you haven't got the MapRun6 app, or an earlier variant such as MapRunF, on your phone download from the relevant app store.

You then need to load the course onto your phone. Do this at home before the event by opening the app, then choosing 'select event', then navigate to the event 'United Kingdom' > 'Kent' > 'Maidstone' > 'Perry Wood Summer Evening June 2022'

There is no need to do any more at home, in particular don't click 'go to start' (do that at Perry Wood).

The maprun results will be online at https://p.fne.com.au/rg/cgi-bin/SelectResultFileForSplitsBrowserFiltered.cgi?act=fileToSplitsBrowser&eventName=ScoreResults_Perry%20Wood%20Summer%20Evening%20June2022%20PXAS%20ScoreV60.csv , but I will put up full results on the Saxons website taking into account any issues with GPS.

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.
