Event Report

Our thanks go to Swale Borough Council for allowing us to use Perry Wood for this evening event. It was good to have some newcomers trying a score event for the first time. In the summer the undergrowth does limit the control sites that can be used, and this affects routes between controls too, nevertheless I hope you enjoyed it.

The third event of this summer series is at Brockhill Park on Saturday 31st August, with the additional offering of an Orienteering Academy for novice orienteers and newcomers.

-------------------------------------------

or alternatively try 'Snooker O'! (inspired by the format used by David Fisher, MV)

Snooker O: There are 9 Red controls (10 points each) plus 3 Green (15pts), 3 Brown (20), 3 Blue (25), 2 pink (30) and 2 Black (35).

Part One: Red then Other colour then Red then Other colour then Red etc. until you have visited all 9 Red and 9 Other colour controls. Each control once only!

Part Two: A Green control then a Brown then a Blue then a Pink then a Black (these may be controls already visited in Part One).

Max number of controls that can be visited = 23

60 minutes with a penalty of 20 points per minute/part minute beyond 60 minutes

------------------------------------------------------

Course closes at 8.45pm - you must report back by this time, so we know everyone has returned.

1:7,500 scale map with 5m contours. Maps will be printed on A4 waterproof paper.

For newcomers, carrying a mobile phone is recommended. The organiser's mobile number will be printed on the map - don't hesitate to call this if you get into difficulty or will be late back.

(& for the experts: Controls will not be SIAC-enabled).

Explanation of Score courses

You don't have to visit all the controls! There is usually a time limit, instead of a set course. Points are scored for visiting controls, and deducted for finishing over the time limit. You decide which controls to visit, and in which sequence. Sometimes controls have different points values. You will need to carry a watch or phone, so you know how long you have been out.

Entry on the day only.

Terrain Description

A very popular woodland locally, ranging from lovely runnable woodland with almost no vegetation (even in high summer) to areas of 6ft high bracken that could be a memorable adventure! Remember this is a score event, so the planning will mean you don't have to venture into the tough areas - just go round rather than through.

Perry Wood has lots of paths, fine views across North Kent, and a nice pub near the middle to aid relocation.

Facilities

Apres-O: We hope you can join us at The Rose & Crown pub near the centre of the map (ME13 9RY), for the opportunity to see how others got on, discuss your route etc.

The pub serves food in the evening, too. There will be a menu on display at Registration. Add your name and what you would like, and I will phone the order through just after you set off on your run.
