Saxons Summer BBQ Event - Sunday 19 July 2009
With the recent warm and wet weather, Angley Woods has become a veritable jungle in places and I had to replan my original course as many of the control sites were
unreachable.  Despite a morning of heavy downpours, 27 of Saxons finest, including a number of black labradors, turned out for the annual challenge - this year a
60 minute individual score event with weighted controls and a hefty penalty of 15 points for each minute late.
As well as the BBQ Event Cup, medals were awarded to the first man and woman in each of the classes: Junior (<21); Senior (21-59); Veteran (60+).   Richard Purkis was
the first person back (and first Male Junior) bagging all 20 controls in 49:53 to score maximum course points of 370.   He was closely followed by Alan Hicking and
Mark Glaisher who also obtained maximum course points.  Richard's route was 66-50-53-62-55-41-57-51-61-42-54-56-43-40-52-60-65-64-58-63.
First Senior Lady was Sarah Scarborough (who just popped in with her dad before going to their own family BBQ) with 320 course points followed by Sarah Howes also
on 320 points.  First Male Veteran was Tony Connellan on 220 points.
Now for the complicated bit.  The BBQ Event Cup is awarded to the first person based on a complicated hadicapping system.  This year's handicap factors were based
on the age class regional event course lengths relative to M21L base with a few additional tweaks.  This evens out the field, making allowances for age and sex as
well as the technical difficulty of the actual course.  This year's winner was Mark Glaisher with a handicap score of 481.  Simon Blanchflower was a close second
on 468 and Alan Hicking was third on 444.
