Kent Night Cup – Round 17 –Benenden
By kind permission of the
45 takers,
including a number of KNC newbies consisting mainly
of
Firstly, can James Burton and Pete
Broom mail me with how many controls you visited so we can get you in the
results. You downloaded once but I needed a second copy of the splits to do the
results. Then I can do the KNC points.
So the rain held off until later
while we were in the very nice pub, The Bull at Benenden. It was wet in places
underfoot however but fairly mild out of the wind. 41 seemed to cause a few
problems. The hedge in the filed to the north east goes all the way to the
forest. An error I forgot to correct on the original map, but it is passable
where the hedge meets the forest there. Some people thought this was the edge
of the field…
I had decided to go for a using the
map once, being a small area, rather than going for a 2 part score, or using
odds/evens, or a dumbbell approach. This meant that quite a few people would
get them all, many of whom would not have ‘got them all’ before, which should
have been an interesting new experience. Then, in order to use up the remaining
time, I thought a map memory exercise would be interesting. I would have
certainly copied my route I ran the first time I think to some degree, but the
trick is to get back in time. Without a map, this is the tricky part I think.
Alan H won having got 8 extra. Neil S was second having gone for 9 extra but
was 89 secs late. Good to see a new name in the top 3
– Justin Mills from SO. First lady was Rachael. Well done all.
The top 2 had nearly identical route
– AH went 49-52-53-37-54-36-50-51-45-44-46-47-42-43-39-55-41-38-40-48-F with NS
doing, from 43-41-38-55-39-40-48-F
Extra Map Mem – AH – 49-53-37-54-52-46-47-48-F. NS-49-52-53-37-54-36-50-46-47-F
So it was good to see 13 people get
all the controls and head out for some more. Do check the results to see if any
errors have crept in. I don’t think we’ll use this format again in a hurry but
it makes a nice change. Results become more complicated and time consuming, and
unless it is an ‘easy’ area like Benenden, map memory at night could be an
issue!
Many thanks to the ever useful Martin
Brice who sorted the printing of the maps for FREE and helped early set up of
the event, Phil Craven for results help in the pub, and our lovely bunch of
control collectors – Steve W, Becky K, Jerry P, Sean C, Martin S – I think that
was all. Also thanks to Susan Bosher, our liason lady at Benenden who took part as well. Great stuff.
Next week we venture over the river
into
NOTE – those travelling from the

Good luck those running at the
