Saxons OC - Kent Night Cup at Blean Wood

Thursday 26th Feb

Firstly, a reminder - next weeks KNC organiser Bridget wants your menu choices by Monday.

51 people made it to Blean, beating last years round total by 5. Luckily, some people worked as a pair using one map and we did not quite run out of the 50 maps we printed. I managed to leave the stack of maps I had from the last event at home too – which was to be our fall back (with non-pre-registered people having to draw up their own map.) But luckily, we did not need them. Various people didn’t make it and I hope Hick Hopes motorbike feels better soon.

This is my third time planning at Blean so I tried to make the route choice decisions to get the controls as hard as possible. I think I did a good job, although many started with 36 to open.

It was Alan Hickling who was the star of the night getting all 20 with 11 seconds to spare. His route: S-36-49-54-38-47-46-45-53-37-48-51-39-55-40-52-41-42-50-44-43-F.

Neil Speers was at #54 with 5 and a half minutes left and #43 left to collect. He gambled and ended up 2:35 mins late and losing a top 3 result.

Best lady of the night in second place overall with all but one control, was former Australian International Sheralee Bailey. Her route again was different S-36-49-54-38-44-50-42-41-52-40-55-39-51-48-37-47-53-45-46-F.

As planner, I am still not really sure what I would have done!

Great to see so many DFOKers and John Butler, now based in the NE, in the top 4, and Gordon Wilson have a super veteran performance. Also great to see the Ashford Explorer Guides out for another helping of KNC action and PARC in the usual healthy numbers. ACTIV have a bike training session Thursday Nights so only 2 of them made it. Also good to see the Kendalls back and slowly working their way up the results list.

The pub food was excellent and the prizes were plentiful for those who could stay. Even the Rambo video went.

Many thanks to my good pal Ady who helped me on the day/eve and collectors of the controls: Dave C, Sean C, Martin S, Steve W, Pieter de K, Sam H & Martin B.

Now I am based in Stockholm, I won’t be at any more KNCs this season – which is a shame! It is great to see midweek O thriving. The atmosphere in the pub, aided by Simon Holfords handing out lots of maps, was hugely encouraging. It is great to see so many people enjoying themselves both inside and out of the forest.

Current total of runs after this, KNC22, is 855 – so we are on target to get over 1000. Last year we had 819 runs after 25 rounds, so about 15% growth rate!

Have fun out there…
